VINTAGE 9CT GOLD FRONT & BACK ROUND LOCKET NECKLACE

Astounding 9ct Yellow Gold front/back locket necklace. This is a truly stunning vintage locket necklace and chain. The locket case is crafted from 9ct Gold. The chain is crafted from 9ct yellow gold and is an 18" diamond cut belcher chain.

A wonderful necklace to keep a photo of a friend/loved one inside the locket and have them with you always! With some lovely scrolling and foliate details engraved to the front and back.

Locket diameter approx 24mm. A truly stunning vintage design. Marked '9ct Gold Back & Front'  on the rear of the locket, marked 375 on the chain.

Excellent vintage condition; a nick or two to the edge commensurate with age; I estimate 1935-50 based on the engraving. It is unused. The chain is modern. 

Casing lockets in Gold 'back and front' is a vintage technique where other metals are used where fixings and moving parts are required (common with lockets). The amount of gold content is very high (often above 50%) as the other metals are used purely to reinforce and last.

In the  Victorian era,  lockets became very popular, and after the invention of photography in the mid-1800s, photos of loved ones were frequently placed inside.  Prior to this period,  lockets often held hairs of loved ones,  ashes from deceased relatives and even powders and poisons!
