VINTAGE SILVER HERALDIC LION DORMANT PENDANT
Christine Alexander Fine Jewellery
Right. If your taste in jewellery leans less “sparkly cupcake” and more “I may or may not have a coat of arms somewhere” — allow me to introduce you to this.
This is a vintage Heraldic Silver pendant, and it is gloriously detailed. Not in a fussy, overworked way — but in that deeply satisfying, “someone took their time over this” way.
At its centre: a lion dormant, reclining atop a rock. Not roaring. Not rampaging. Just… calmly existing with absolute authority. One paw rests on a shield bearing a fleur-de-Lys, with a pike trapped beneath (which feels symbolic, even if we’re not entirely sure of what — but it’s definitely saying something important).
Facing him? Another shield marked with the cross of St. George — because if you’re going to have symbolism, you may as well go full medieval about it.
✨ The Details (for the historically curious and the aesthetically picky)
- Material: Silver (unhallmarked, but confidently so)
- Size: 26 x 18mm
- Design: Heraldic lion dormant with shields, fleur-de-Lys and cross motifs
- Condition: Very good vintage condition, with a natural patina and a small mark on the reverse (because perfection is suspicious)
- Hallmark: None
🕰️ Provenance (aka “Where has this been all its life?”)
Dating this piece precisely is… let’s say, optimistic, given the lack of a hallmark. However, I can say with complete confidence that it is vintage.
It came from the collection of a Birmingham jeweller, where it then spent approximately 28 years living quietly in his granddaughter’s loft — which is, frankly, the most British backstory imaginable.
Now it’s here. Waiting for its next chapter. Possibly with you.
🦁 A Note on Lions (because heraldry is nothing if not specific)
In heraldry, lions are depicted in very particular poses — the most famous being the lion rampant (all claws and drama, like it’s just stepped on Lego).
But this one?
This is a lion dormant — lying down, eyes closed, head resting on its paws.
A rare motif. A calm power. The energy of someone who doesn’t need to prove anything because they already know.
They’re not commonly seen, but do appear in certain historic coats of arms — and notably at the feet of the tomb of Richard I of England, because of course they do.
📚 A Small Disclaimer (from me, your enthusiastic but honest seller)
I adore researching my pieces — but I am not, alas, a fully fledged heraldry scholar.
I’ve done my digging, asked around, and hit a bit of a wall on the exact symbolism here. If I uncover more, I’ll update the listing — because I enjoy a good mystery, but I enjoy solving it even more.
🧐 Condition Notes (because vintage means lived-in, not flawed)
I photograph my pieces clearly and describe them honestly.
This is a pre-owned, vintage item, so it does show light signs of age and wear — including a patina and a small mark on the reverse. Personally, I think this adds character. If you’re after something clinically perfect, this is not that piece.
If you’re after something with history? You’re in the right place.
