🌙 A Little Moon, With A LOT of History

Now, because you know I am incapable of looking at a piece of jewellery without disappearing down a historical rabbit hole, let's talk about the crescent.

The crescent moon symbol has been used for thousands of years and has appeared across a rather enormous collection of cultures, religions and civilisations.

The crescent was associated with the ancient Mesopotamian Moon deity Nanna/Sin, with representations appearing on Akkadian cylinder seals as early as around 2300 BC.

It later appeared alongside the star on pre-Islamic coins from South Arabia and became part of Sassanian and Hellenistic iconography.

And then we have Artemis and Diana, who are frequently depicted wearing the crescent Moon as part of their headdress. Because obviously even ancient goddesses understood the importance of good accessories.

The crescent continued as an emblem in Sassanid Persia, where it could appear as a Zoroastrian regal or astrological symbol, before eventually becoming a heraldic charge in medieval Europe.

Its story then continued into Islamic iconography, with the symbol appearing on military flags and later becoming strongly associated with several Islamic states and cultures.

So this isn't merely a cute little moon shape.

It's a tiny piece of symbolism with thousands of years of history behind it.

And I rather love that.
