Why Rubies Have Been Turning Heads for Centuries

Rubies have been treasured since at least the 6th century AD, prized for their rich red tones that range from purplish-red to fiery orangey-red. Historically sourced from legendary regions such as Mogok in Burma, Rubies have long been associated with wealth, passion, power and protection.

In Sanskrit, Ruby earned the title ratnaraj — "King of Precious Stones." Not content with merely being royalty, it later became ratnanayaka, meaning "Leader of Precious Stones." Which feels wonderfully on-brand for a gemstone that has spent thousands of years making every other stone look as though it forgot to make an effort.

Rubies are also famous for a fascinating property known as pleochroism. This means they display slightly different colours depending on the angle from which they are viewed.
