Ruby is a pink to a blood-red coloured gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). Ruby is one of the traditional cardinal gems, together with amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and Diamond. The colour of a ruby is due to the element chromium. The quality of a ruby is determined by its colour, cut, and clarity, which, along with carat weight, affect its value. After colour follows clarity: similar to Diamonds, a clear stone will command a premium, but a ruby without any needle-like rutile inclusions may indicate that the stone has been treated. The world's most valuable ruby is the Sunrise Ruby. Ruby is the birthstone for July and the anniversary gemstone for both the 15th and 40th years of marriage.
Diamonds are far from evenly distributed over the Earth. Clifford's rule states that they are almost always found in kimberlites on the oldest part of cratons, the stable cores of continents with typical ages of 2.5 billion years or more. Kimberlite pipes can be difficult to find. If they are visible in outcrops, the Diamonds are never visible because they are so rare. Finding kimberlites requires persistence, and only a small fraction contain Diamonds that are commercially viable. Since existing mines have lifetimes of as little as 25 years, there could be a shortage of new Diamonds in the future, making them a sensible investment.
