Silver: A Precious Metal With A Rather Extraordinary History

Silver has been part of human civilisation for thousands of years.

The word "Silver" appears in Anglo-Saxon in forms including seolfor and siolfor, and Silver was one of the seven metals known to prehistoric humans.

It was once considered extraordinarily valuable. In fact, Silver was more expensive than Gold in ancient Egypt until around the fifteenth century BC.

The development of cupellation made it possible to extract Silver more efficiently from its ores, dramatically changing its availability and helping establish Silver as one of the world's great precious metals.

Silver production has incredibly ancient roots in places including India, China and Japan, although much of that early history is understandably difficult to document.

Sterling Silver naturally tarnishes over time when exposed to air, moisture and certain chemicals. This is completely normal and isn't a fault with the jewellery.

To keep your Sterling Silver curb chain looking its best, I recommend removing it before swimming, bathing, showering and exercising where practical.

Perfume, hairspray, creams, cosmetics, chlorine and household cleaning products are also best kept away from your jewellery.

When you're not wearing it, store your chain somewhere clean and dry, preferably in a soft jewellery pouch or box.

And please don't simply throw it into a drawer with seventeen other chains and then act surprised when you've accidentally created the Jewellery Gordian Knot of 2026.

If the Silver begins to dull or tarnish, a good-quality Silver polishing cloth will usually bring the sparkle straight back.
