🔗 What Is a Byzantine Link?

The Byzantine link is a beautifully intricate chain design made from interlocking links woven together to create a distinctive, almost braided appearance.

The result is considerably more interesting than a standard curb or rope chain, with a lovely combination of texture, movement and shine.

This particular version is flat and highly polished, giving it a contemporary finish while retaining that wonderfully elaborate Byzantine character.

And although I'm calling this the finest flat Byzantine link I currently have at 5mm wide, that's not where the story ends.

These beauties are expertly crafted in Italy, where there is a long and rather magnificent tradition of jewellery and chain-making.

The highly polished finish gives the Silver an incredible amount of light-catching shine, while the intricate link construction creates depth and texture.

They're also UK hallmarked as 925 Sterling Silver, reassuring you that you're buying genuine Sterling Silver rather than something described using the sort of creative terminology that makes me want to lie down in a darkened room.

925 Sterling Silver means the metal contains 92.5% pure Silver, with the remaining metal made up of other alloys to give the finished jewellery the strength and durability it needs.

🏛️ A Little Byzantine Jewellery History

Now, this is where my history-nerd tendencies get involved.

Because obviously I cannot simply sell you a pretty bracelet.

I have to tell you where the inspiration comes from.

The Byzantine Empire had an enormous appetite for magnificent jewellery, with elaborate necklaces, rings, bracelets, brooches and gem-set pieces forming part of the visual language of wealth and status.

Byzantine jewellery was influenced by cultures and artistic traditions stretching across a vast geographical area, including Greece, North Africa and regions around Russia and the wider Mediterranean.

And with access to significant quantities of Gold, Byzantine jewellers had rather excellent raw materials with which to play.

The result was jewellery that could be highly decorative, intricate and unmistakably luxurious.

There was even legislation governing aspects of jewellery and luxury during the Byzantine period. The Justinian Code, compiled under Emperor Justinian I in the sixth century, formed part of a wider system of laws regulating society and commerce.

So, essentially, even the Byzantines had a jewellery bureaucracy.

Some things really are eternal.

The Byzantine aesthetic eventually gave way to other European artistic traditions, particularly as political and cultural power shifted and Constantinople fell in 1204 during the Fourth Crusade, with Western European Gothic influences becoming increasingly prominent in later centuries.

And now, all these centuries later, we get to wear the inspiration around our wrists.

History, but make it fabulous.
