Creole earrings: very popular today with trendy women. A Creole is defined as a hoop earring, broader at the bottom than at the top, which was popular in the 1850s. They are frequently highly decorated and have a secure bar and clip fastener. This earring style is most commonly seen in oval-shaped earrings, however, there are times where you may come across a triangle or another shape. They are a popular accessory, especially in hip hop culture. The word "creole" means slave in Surinamese. This is, in fact, a reference to the colonial era, when African slaves had to wear round earrings or a cuff bracelet. This made it clear that they were someone's property. They symbolise resilience, strength and identity in some black and Caribbean cultures and are commonly worn by women in the Caribbean and West Africa. Moreover, in some New Orleans Creole families, creole earrings are considered a rite of passage. Looking back in history, fishermen and pirates alike wore creole earrings, typically in gold, and usually in the left ear. Well-known fashionistas like wearing conspicuous, large gold earrings, and have made creole earrings super cool again.
