A lot of the rubies sold today were not mined from the earth but were actually created in a lab. Created rubies (also known as synthetic, cultured, or lab-grown rubies) are created through an artificial process that usually involves high temperature and pressure.

It should be noted that artificially produced rubies are not the same as fake rubies, which have a different chemical structure from that of natural ruby. From a chemical standpoint, lab-created rubies are no different from natural ones and are considered real rubies.

Although synthetic and natural rubies are virtually identical, there are some very subtle differences that can be detected with the appropriate equipment by a trained Gemologist.

While Sapphires are mainly known for their blue variety, many other colours exist as well, including white. White Sapphires have a unique charm; something that sets them apart from other colourless stones and from their coloured sapphire counterparts.

At first glance, the stone may look identical to some other popular colourless stones such as a Diamond, Moissanite, or Topaz. However, White Sapphires tend to display a cloudy white look. It is a naturally durable stone that was created under the earth’s surface over millions of years.

The prices for White Sapphires are far lower than Diamonds. Another advantage of these transparent stones is that they can be used as side stones instead of splurging on more Diamonds for your piece of jewellery. Lastly, never forget that Sapphires, even White Sapphires, are one of the four precious gemstones, which include Diamonds, Rubies, Emeralds, and Sapphires.
