A lot of the rubies sold today were not mined from the earth but were created in a lab. Synthetic Rubies (also known as created, cultured, or lab-grown Rubies) are created through an artificial process that usually involves high temperature and pressure.

It should be noted that artificially produced Rubies are not the same as fake Rubies, which have a different chemical structure from that of natural Rubies. From a chemical standpoint, lab-created Rubies are no different from natural ones and are considered real Rubies.

Although synthetic and natural Rubies are virtually identical, some very subtle differences can be detected with the appropriate equipment by a trained Gemologist.

In 1902, French chemist Auguste Verneuil pioneered a process for creating synthetic Sapphire crystals. Chemical additives can produce artificial versions of Ruby and all the other natural Sapphire colours, and even create new, never-before-seen hues. Lab-created gems are virtually identical to mined ones in terms of chemical, physical, and optical properties, but they tend to have fewer flaws and come at a lower cost. So, the more rare and costly natural gems like Sapphires, Emeralds, and Rubies now have lab-created alternatives that are gaining popularity.

Thanks for hanging out with me today – I'm thrilled to have you here! 😊💎💖
