Celtic knot designs — sometimes referred to as Icovellavna — trace their origins all the way back to the Roman Empire. The intricate interlace patterns evolved through Byzantine architecture, Coptic art, early Christian manuscripts and, of course, the glorious Insular art of the Celtic lands.
One of the earliest true knotted designs appears in a 7th-century Gospel Book fragment housed in Durham Cathedral. (Yes. Your wrist is now basically a travelling museum.)
