Sterling Silver crucifix, extremely detailed and finished to a very high standard.
This large pendant crucifix is designed magnificently. It is very detailed and extremely meaningful. Designed in a way that enables you to see all the significant details without straining your eyes too much.
The inscription on the upright of this piece - 'INRI' - represents the Latin inscription IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM, which in English translates to Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews (John 19:19). John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages - Hebrew, Latin and Greek - and was put on the cross of Jesus.
This is a sizeable crucifix at 55x30mm (including chunky v-shaped bale). This listing is for the pendant only; if a chain is required I would recommend this one.
In the Roman, Persian and Jewish world, the crucifixion cross was the brutal and humiliating instrument of execution for non-citizens such as slaves, pirates and foreign political agitators or other criminals. Thus, at the time of Christ’s death, it was not an emblem likely to make many converts! Even after Emperor Constantine’s conversion, the cross remained for some centuries an emblem of faith secondary to Christ’s Chi-Rho monogram. In art, schematic representations of the crucifixion with an impassive Christ gradually gave way to powerful images of his agony such as we see in the crucifix.
