In the Roman, Persian and Jewish world, the crucifixion cross was the brutal and humiliating instrument of execution for non-citizens such as slaves, pirates and foreign political agitators or other criminals. Thus, at the time of Christ’s death, it was not an emblem likely to make many converts! Even after Emperor Constantine’s conversion, the cross remained for some centuries an emblem of faith secondary to Christ’s Chi-Rho monogram. In art, schematic representations of the crucifixion with an impassive Christ gradually gave way to powerful images of his agony such as we see in the crucifix.
The inscription on the upright of this piece - 'INRI' - represents the Latin inscription IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which in English translates to Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews (John 19:19). John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages - Hebrew, Latin and Greek - and was put on the cross of Jesus.
