A sultry brown variation of quartz. Also known as Cairngorm Quartz after the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland where it was once mined, Smokey Quartz is the national gemstone of Scotland. It is the Eastern birthstone for October and the birthstone for Capricorn.
It is thought to transform negative energy and is reported to be effective at dealing with anger.
In addition to Scotland, this gem has been discovered in Brazil, Germany, Australia, India, Madagascar and the USA. It is often heat-treated.
The important thing to remember with storage is to keep jewellery away from strong light, which can fade many gems. Amethyst, Ametrine, Aquamarine, Aventurine, Beryl, Citrine, Kunzite, Rose Quartz and Smokey Quartz are all particularly at risk of fading in strong sunlight.
